Understanding Google Sites Updates: What's Shutting Down and What's Not?
For those who use Google Sites to build and manage their online presence, recent announcements might have caused some confusion. I hope I'm able to clear things up by explaining the two distinct types of Google Sites and what their respective futures hold.
"Classic Google Sites" and the Transition to "New Sites"
Launched in 2008, Classic Google Sites offered a user-friendly platform for creating basic websites.
However, in 2020, Google introduced New Sites with a more modern interface, enhanced features, and better mobile responsiveness.
As part of this evolution, editing functionalities for Classic Sites ended in January 2023.
What happened to existing Classic Sites?
Google is currently in the process of automatically migrating remaining Classic Sites to New Sites as drafts.
These drafts will be available for site owners to review, edit, and publish. Notably, this migration process only affects the backend functionality. The content and structure of your website will remain intact.
What should you do if you have a Classic Site?
If you haven't already, check your email or Google Sites dashboard for any migration notifications. Once notified, log in to New Sites and review the draft version of your migrated website. Here, you can:
Review and edit the content: Ensure everything looks and functions as intended.
Explore new features: New Sites offers various functionalities absent in the Classic version, such as improved layout options, media embedding, and easier collaboration tools.
Publish the website: Once satisfied with the draft, publish your website to make it live again.
What About Websites Built with Google Business Profiles?
These were simple websites automatically generated based on your Google Business Profile information.
They used the ".business.site" or ".negocio.site" domain and offered limited customization options.
What's happening to websites made with Google Business Profiles?
These websites are being shut down in March 2024. After that, visitors attempting to access your website will be redirected to your Google Business Profile until June 10, 2024. Following this date, visitors will encounter a "page not found" error.
What should you do if you have a website made with Google Business Profiles?
To maintain your online presence, you'll need to create a new website using another platform. Popular website builders like
Here's what you need to do:
Choose a website builder: Research and select a platform that aligns with your needs and technical expertise.
Create your new website: Design and build your new website, ensuring it reflects your brand and effectively communicates your message.
Update your Google Business Profile: Include the new website address in your Business Profile so visitors can find you easily.
While Classic Google Sites are no longer editable, they are being seamlessly transitioned to the new and improved New Sites platform.
However, websites built using Google Business Profiles are being phased out completely.
By understanding these changes and taking necessary actions, you can ensure your online presence remains strong and uninterrupted.
